Description	:	William Hoyd Lay was born August 16, 1916 at Van Buren, MO, the son of Henderson Roy "H.R." Lay and Lisa Anna (Winchester) Lay. He passed away August 28, 2007 at Springfield, MO at the age of 91 years. Bill was united in marriage to Imo Hasty in 1938 at Van Buren, MO. To this union one daughter was born. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 40 years, Florene Lay; four sisters, Esther Buckner, Gertrude Buckner, Clara Sharp and Nova Brawley; and two brothers, Lester Lay and Lloyd Lay. He passed away August 28, 2007 at Springfield, MO at the age of 91 years. Bill was united in marriage to Imo Hasty in 1938 at Van Buren, MO. To this union one daughter was born. Bill later married Florene Beshears. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 40 years, Florene Lay; four sisters, Esther Buckner, Gertrude Buckner, Clara Sharp and Nova Brawley; and two brothers, Lester Lay and Lloyd Lay. Bill is survived by his daughter, Mary Dianna Cole, and husband, Patrick, of Allons, TN; one stepson, Buddy Thomason, and wife, Arlene, of Florissant, MO; one sister, Opal Woolsey, of Sullivan, MO; his very special friend of over 80 years, Lee Brawley; five grandchildren, P.J. Cole and wife, Tanya; Christine Munsey; Billy Cole and wife, Robbie; Rebecca Harris and husband, David, and Jeffrey Cole, all of Allons, TN; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, all of Tennessee; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Bill was raised in Wild Cat Holler in Shannon County, MO and attended New Liberty School in Shannon County. He and his family moved to Lawson Holler where he met his bride, Imo Hasty. Bill and Imo built a one room cabin at Lawson Holler where they lived until a few years later when they relocated to St. Louis, MO. Bill and Imo made their home in south St. Louis, MO where their daughter, Mary Dianna Lay, was born. Bill worked as a foreman at a war plant company in St. Louis for a couple of years when they first moved to the city. Bill later owned and operated Bill's Body Shop, an automobile garage and body shop, at 13th and Gravois in St. Louis, MO for several years. Bill and Florene moved to California in 1957. Shortly after they moved to California, Bill went looking for a job, but was having difficulty finding work. He went in to talk with the owner of a Buick dealership, and asked the owner if he would hire him. Bill gave the gentleman the offer to work for him for two weeks, and if he didn't like his work, he owed him nothing; but if he did like his work, he would expect to be paid good wages. Bill was employed with that dealership as a manager and auto appraiser until he retired in 1983. Bill received several awards and plaques from the company for his many achievements and for outstanding recognition. He remained close to the owners of the company during his employment, which saw the dealership grow to a large company during the years he worked there. Bill and Florene moved back to the Festus-Crystal City, MO area in 1983 when Florene became ill. Bill moved back to Winona, MO in 1995 after Florene passed away in 1994. Bill loved to go four-wheeling in the woods, and he rode his four-wheeler everywhere he went. He enjoyed wrestling and would go to the wrestling matches at the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. Bill enjoyed traveling, going to yard sales and antiquing. Bill was known for always being a gentleman. He loved women and always treated them with the utmost respect. Bill loved to flirt, and he never met an ugly woman. Bill will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 30, 2007 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dorothy Brooks officiating. Interment was in the Mt.
