When first taken he was at the house of E. F. Gaines, whose ailment he had been treating. He started home, a distance of three or four blocks, but grew worse, and before he reached home sat down on the walk. The attention of neighbors was attracted and he was helped home. Dr. Gethman was called and succeeded in relieving him most of the night. He arose in the morning and ate breakfast. It was thought best that he keep quiet. He was sitting in a rocking chair when death came so suddenly that Mrs. Ibach, the only person in the house at the time, had not even time to call in her son, who was working in the yard, till after he was dead. Wm. Ibach was born in Lancaster county, Pa., June 4th 1833. He was raised in Morrow county, Ohio, where his parents moved when he was about three years of age. In 1855 he came to Hardin county and has resided here ever since. Oct. 24, 1860, he was married to Miss Rhoda P. Babcock, who survives him. They raised five children - Sherman W., E. H. and A. E. Ibach, Mrs. Agnes Crane, now living in Connecticut, and Mrs. Nellie H. Goodwin, who died in Eldora last year. Wm. Ibach was the first of the brothers to come to Hardin county. He was followed later by three brothers, familiarly known as Frank, Dan, and Charles. The two first named still live a few miles southeast of Eldora, and Charlie lives in South Dakota. There were all good citizens in all the term implies. The deceased, like most of the pioneers, first engaged in farming when he came to Iowa. Some twenty years ago he had a leg amputated below the knee, from getting it caught in a horse power. He was engaged for some years in the manufacture of brick. At cue time he engaged in the sale of agricultural implements, in which he lost heavily, and for several past years he has been in the insurance business. He was one of the best known men in Hardin county. People who knew him were his friends. And still another pioneer of Hardin county as passed away. For forty-two years Wm. Ibach was known almost like a land mark to the people of this county, and it was a shock to the entire community when the sad news of his death was announced, for the last day of his life was as cheerful and pleasant to those he met as any day previous.
