Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2009, at Gaston First Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Farmer, Rev. Erskine Shivers, and Rev. Robert Jumper officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be L.H. Sightler, Marvin Rish, Bobby Ott, Thomas Dowd, Eddie Spradley, and Joel Dowd. Mr. Dowd was born in Swansea, a son of the late Henry W. and Lilly Mae Jumper Dowd. He was a member of Gaston First Baptist Church. He was a retired auto mechanic. Survivors include his wife, Sue Williams Dowd, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Charles Edwards, of Smithfield, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law: Donnie and Karen Dowd of Gaston; Johnny and Irma Dowd of Gaston; and Henry and Rita Dowd of Irmo; four sisters: Lizzie Mae Spradley, Margaret Pound and Louise Spradley, all of Gaston, and Juanita Bass, of South Congaree; grandchildren: Buddy, Angie, Yvette, Carie, Joel, Tonya, John, Jennifer, David, Chuck and Kenneth; 10 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home, 325 Irvin Dowd Circle, Gaston.
