Description	:	Wm J. "Bill" Dailey was born in New York, March 28, 1828. On January 4, 1851, he married Margaret Melius and to this union, seven children were born. About 1857, he moved his wife and two young children to McHenry County, Illinois. His in-laws, Peter & Polly Melius, and many other Melius family members migrated there too. However, plans to... Read More	Wm J. "Bill" Dailey was born in New York, March 28, 1828. On January 4, 1851, he married Margaret Melius and to this union, seven children were born. About 1857, he moved his wife and two young children to McHenry County, Illinois. His in-laws, Peter & Polly Melius, and many other Melius family members migrated there too. And two more children joined the family. By 1862, Bill Dailey was unhappy with farming shares in Illinois. The crops were not doing well and the families looked to greener pastures in Iowa. However, plans to move were put on hold with the onset of the Civil War. Several men in the family, including Bill, enlisted. The money looked good compared to the meager income they had from farming. He and Margaret probably did not know that she was pregnant with their 5th child when he enlisted. In the early morning of May 20, 1863, Company F was stationed just outside of Vicksburg. When the order to move came, Dailey grabbed his gun, but it accidentally discharged and broke the middle finger of his left hand. This digit required amputation, and, since Bill had been suffering from poor health, he was moved to the hospital in Memphis. After being stabilized he was transferred to a hospital in Chicago, where he remained until January of 1864. During this time he was treated for disease of the heart, chronic diarrhea and dropsy. Bill must have recovered quite well for at least a while. Two more children joined the family, and about 1869, the Daileys made their move to Iowa where he lived out the rest of his days. ------------------------ From the Spencer Reporter March 4, 1897 Another Old Soldier Dies Died in Sioux twp. Feb. 26, Wm. J. Dailey, age 68 years and 11 months. The deceased was a member of the 95th Ill. vol. inf. during the war and served his country well, but succumed to that enemy of old soldiers....heart disease. The funeral took place in the free will Baptist Church. Rev. J. I. Brown of Estherville officiating.
