Description	:	William J. Hilt, 96 passed away November 12, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Village, where he resided the last three years. He was born to Jacob and Elizabeth (Lesser) Hilt in Ritzville, Washington on August 26, 1913. He was baptized on October 5, 1913. As a young boy, Bill and the rest of the Hilt family moved to Idaho before moving northwest of St. Francis in the early 1920s. Read More	William J. Hilt, 96 passed away November 12, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Village, where he resided the last three years. He was born to Jacob and Elizabeth (Lesser) Hilt in Ritzville, Washington on August 26, 1913. He was baptized on October 5, 1913. As a young boy, Bill and the rest of the Hilt family moved to Idaho before moving northwest of St. Francis in the early 1920s. He was confirmed in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church June 29, 1931. He attended German Plains grade school before he quit school to help his dad with farming. Bill served in the Army from 1941 to 1945. He was involved in five major battles: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945. On January 27, 1946 he married Bertha Keller at the Salem Lutheran Church. They farmed northwest of St. Francis until they moved near Idalia, Colorado. They finally settled on the farm southwest of St. Francis. He enjoyed raising and breaking colts to ride. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Elizabeth; infant son Martin, stepmother Christina (Oman) Hilt; sister Pauline Braun; brothers Emil, Walter and Lawrence. Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha; son Alfred of St. Francis; daughters Ruth Appel of Rush Center, Kansas; and Ruby Garard and husband, Wesley of Lebo, Kansas; sister Easter Brunswig, St. Francis; sister-in-law Leila Hilt, St. Francis; grandsons Kevin Appel, Rush Center, Luke Garard, Valrico, Florida; granddaughters Denise Shuey and husband, Josh, Hoisington, Kansas and Gretchen McCauley and husband Shannon, Kansas City, Missouri; great-grandson, Levi Shuey; great-granddaughter Lyssa Shuey and many nieces, nephews and their families. Services held November 16, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis, Kansas pastor Ken Hart officiating. Burial took place at Hope Valley Cemetery with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Knodel Funeral Home arranged the services.
