All were students at Iowa State University and lived in "The Towers" (Storms Hall, Baker House). Murray, Hall and Balm had been visiting another Iowa State friend in rural Story County and were heading back to Ames when their car collided with another car at an intersection of Highway 30 and a county blacktop road two miles east of Nevada about 9:10 p.m. Murray, 20, and Hall, 20, were killed instantly. Balm, 20, was taken to Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Back in the residence hall, news of the deaths of William Murray and Dennis Hall, and critical injury of Tim Balm in the accident, all residents of Baker House, Storms Hall dormitory, was taken very hard as fellows tried to grapple with their losses and console one another. One resident reportedly had a phone call from one of Bill's family, asking if Bill was there, in hopes the notification they received was a mistake. His was a promising life cut short. _____________________________ NEVADA - William J. Murray, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. "Jack" Murray, of Harlan, was killed in a two-car accident east of here at 9:10 p.m. Friday. Dennis L. Hall, 20, of Coon Rapids, was also killed in the mishap, and each car's driver was hospitalized with injuries. According to Iowa Highway Patrol, the auto of Timothy Balm, 20, of Hudson, was traveling north on a county road from Maxwell when it failed to stop at the highway intersection and collided with the westbound auto of Bernard E. Longley, 25 of Luzerne. Information on which car the two persons killed were riding in was not available in the Patrol's report. Services for the Murray youth are 2:00 p.m. today (Monday) at Pauley Home for Funerals, and burial is at Harlan Cemetery. Survivors include his parents; two sisters: Mrs. Kenneth (Susan) Kobold of Harlan and Linda, at home; two brothers: Steven and Gary, at home; grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. William Murray of Audubon and Gustav Muller of Germany.
