May 9, 1897 d. 1919 William Crowl passed away at his home Monday morning, April 7th after an illness of about three weeks. Although his health has not been of the best this last year or so, his recovery seemed a certainty until Friday morning when he seemed to grow worse. He had been able to be up and around, but was again confined to his bed until his death. The cause of his death was due to pneumonia with serious complications. William Crowl was born in the state of New York on July 1st, 1865. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Crowl. At the age of four years, in 1869, he with his parents moved to Grand Mound, Iowa, Clinton county. Here the days of his boyhood and manhood were spent. Deceased was a member of the Methodist church which he joined while a young lad. He took an active part in Sunday school affairs, and later on was superintendent of the same for a number of years. He was a conscientious christian and devoted his life to the following of the principles and ideals of the church. On March 20, 1890, he was married to Cora B. Risley at Grand Mound, Iowa, a union which proved a very happy one. There the devoted couple lived until 1893. They then moved to Springfield, S.D., where they resided for two years. From there they returned to their former home in Iowa and resided there until seven years ago. In 1912 they moved to Geneso township and then to Lockwood, where they resided at the time of his death. He was superintendent of the Sunday school in that township for the past two years. To this happy union were born four children, Elsie, Earl, William and Helen. Elsie and Helen died only a few weeks ago and lie buried at Evergreen cemetery. Deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Modern Woodman. With the death of Mr. Crowl, the township lost a highly respected and honorable citizen as well as a dearly loved conscientious church member. Deceased leaves to mourn his loss a sorrowing widow, two sons, Earl and William, two grandchildren, two brothers, Charles of Goldfield, Iowa, and James of Brule, Nebraska. His last moments were spent in prayer, and at his request the funeral service was based on the text taken from St. John's Chapter XIV verse 2 as follows: "In my Father's House are Many Mansions. I go to prepare a place for you." Brief funeral services were held at the Crowl home in Lockwood, Wednesday, April 9th, Rev. Caliee officiated. The remains were shipped to Grand Mound, his old home, for interment, at the Evergreen cemetery, beside his departed ones. The remains were accompanied by the remaining family and Mrs. Tully Sunderlin, who so kindly assisted them during their sorrow. Mrs. Crowl with her infant granddaughter will take a much needed rest with her brother and sisters in Iowa. Clinton Advertiser (Clinton, IA), Tuesday, April 15, 1919, page 6.
