Melloy, highly esteemed resident of Bernard, passed away at his home there Tuesday morning at 6:00 o'clock, following a lingering illness. Mr. Melloy was in the 76th year of his age at the time of his demise. He had lived practically his entire life in the community where he died. Born, October 19, 1874, near the town of Bernard, he was the son of the late James and Catherine (Cannon) Melloy. He received his education in the schools of his home community and on September 28, 1909, in Dubuque, Iowa, at Sacred Heart church, was united in Holy Matrimony with Miss Mary Eichhorn. Following their marriage the young couple took up residence in Bernard where Mr. Melloy conducted a meat market. In 1936, he retired from this type of business. From 1932 to January, 1935, he served the county well as a member of the board of supervisors. In 1938 and 1939 he was employed by the State of Iowa as a food Inspector. A lifelong Catholic, Mr. Melloy was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Fillmore, its Holy Name and Rosary societies. Surviving his passing are his helpmate of 41 years; four daughters - Mrs. John (Melitta) Otting and Mrs. Connie (Estella) Shanahan, Bernard; Mrs. Henry (Monica) Gehl, Cascade, and Mrs. Bert (Catherine) Donovan, East Dubuque, llllnois; two sons – William and Thomas, both of Dubuque, three sisters — Miss Mary E. Melloy, Mrs. Catherine Cox Mrs. William Clark, all of Dubuque; one brother, James Melloy, Bernard, and twenty-one grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services for Mr. Melloy were held this (Thursday) morning from the Devaney Funeral Home to Sacred Heart church Fillmore, at 9:30 o'clock. The pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. R. P. Duggan, offered the Requiem High Mass for the repose of his soul. He also delivered a consoling sermon to the bereaved family, relatives, and a host of friends. Interment was made in St. Patrick's cemetery, Garryowen, Msgr. Duggan also officiating at the graveside. Honorary pallbearers, all member of the Holy Name Society, were: Frank Drlscoll, Joe Drew, Chris Mausser, Jacob Wagner, William Walsh, Clem Bergfeld. Active pallbearers included Jerry Ryle, Lawrence Decker, Frank Malloy, Leo Noonan, Fred Takes, William Dunn, Mossie Donovan, Mike Ryle.
