He was born in Iowa Township, Sept. 3, 1852, and is the son of Hyrcanus and Melissa (Dinwiddie) Guinn. His parents were among the very earliest pioneers of the county; and consequently had to endure their share of the hardships incident to the settling of a new country, in fact, Jackson often looks back to his early childhood and recalls, perhaps, the scanty "board" and wonders how father and mother had the courage to leave their home of plenty and go forth to inevitable trials and privations. W. J. was educated in the district schools, and at the High School of Belle Plaine. He began teaching school when quite young, and has taught in all some fifteen terms; he taught the Belle Plaine city school one year and a third. Mr. Guinn was married at Belle Plaine, Dec. 21, 1876, to Miss Julia F. Benson, daughter of W. W. and Catharine (Kurtz) Benson, of Belle Plaine. Mrs. Guinn was born in Crawford County, Ohio, June 10, 1857. Two children were born of their marriage, a daughter and son — Lillian M., April 13, 1879, and Grover G., Sept. 28, 1884; both were born in Iowa Township. Mr. Guinn is a Democrat in politics and a Knight Templar Mason. He is a member of Hope Lodge No. 175, A. F. & A. M., of Mt. Horeb Chapter No. 45, R. A. M., and of St. Bernard Commandery, No. 14, K. T. Mr. Guinn has made his home on his present farm since his marriage. He is the present Assessor of Iowa Township, and is serving his fourth term in that office. he has also served as Treasurer of his school district. Mrs. Guinn has also taught school, having taught one year in Belle Plaine and three terms in the schools of Iowa Township; she is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Belle Plaine.
