Description	:	William James Cooksley (1831) was the first Cooksley to immigrate to Dyersville, IA in 1857. He is a cousin of our grandfather, William B. Cooksley, (B1874). Cooksley in Death's Sleep Dyersville Man Passed to Reward on Eighty-fifth Birthday -- Resided on Farm in North Fork For Half Century - Death Occurred Friday Mr. Wm. Cooksley, one of the pioneer settlers of North Fork township, Delaware county, passed to his reward, at the family home in East Dyersville, last Friday afternoon about one o'clock after a brief sick spell. His death occurred on his eighty-fifth birthday. While he was advanced in years Mr. Cooksley was in fairly good health and able to be about up to some weeks ago. It seems that since he was struck by an automobile in an accident, he has been afflicted with nervousness, and on Friday preceding his death he suffered a paralytic stroke. He fell to the floor and his wife who was also ill summoned help and he was removed to his bed. From that time on he became gradually weaker, death winning the mastery at the hour above stated. The news of the death of Mr. Cooksley came with keen regret to his numerous friends and acquaintances. William Cooksley was born in Upperweare, Sommersetshire, England, on the 28th day of January, 1831. He grew to manhood in his native city and came to America in 1857, coming directly to Dyersville, and soon located on a farm southwest of town. On December 24, 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Elisabeth TOOMER and to this union were born four sons and four daughters. One son and one daughter proceeded him in death. The others who with their sorrowing mother survive are: Eliza, Mrs. Joseph Cooksley, of Dyersville: Anna, Mrs. George D. Nichols, of Worthington; May, Mrs. J. A. Besler, of Hopkinton; Frank, Albert and Edward Cooksley. All were privileged to be at his bedside when the final summons came. He is also survived by one brother, John, in England. Mr. and Mrs. Cooksley resided on the farm in North Fork township, until a year and a half ago, when they moved to Dyersville to the home in which he died. (Taken from Dyersville Commercial Thurs.
