Description	:	WILLIAM JAMES McCLAIN, 82, of Asheville, North Carolina, and formerly of Oak Ridge, TN, died at the Asheville V A Medical Center on July 5, 2008. Born February 27, 1926 in Etowah, TN, Dr. McClain was the son of Joe H. McClain and Ella Perry McClain. He graduated from Etowah High School where he participated in varsity football and basketball. Read More	WILLIAM JAMES McCLAIN, 82, of Asheville, North Carolina, and formerly of Oak Ridge, TN, died at the Asheville V A Medical Center on July 5, 2008. Born February 27, 1926 in Etowah, TN, Dr. McClain was the son of Joe H. McClain and Ella Perry McClain. He graduated from Etowah High School where he participated in varsity football and basketball. In the Boy Scouts, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After attending the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he was a member of the varsity football team. He received BS degrees from the Academy in 1947 and the Naval Postgraduate School in 1955. He remained in the Navy, serving as a pilot, logging flights all over the world until he received a medical discharge in 1955. After receiving MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Dr. McClain served as adjunct professor of both Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Roane State Community College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, and the University of Tennessee, where he taught classes for the Evening School in Oak Ridge, TN. He is a past member of the Kiwanis and Civitan Clubs in Oak Ridge, served on the Eagle Scout Board of Review, and wrote many letters of recommendation to the Naval Academy for local young people. He was instrumental in the development of Youth Haven in Oak Ridge, serving on its Board of Directors for several years. Dr. McClain's work history includes Sperry Gyroscope Company in California and in Bristol, TN, and the K-25 and Y -12 plants in Oak Ridge where he was associated with the Computer Technology Center, a Nuclear Medicine project, and others. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, sang in the choir, and often worked with the Youth Group. In Asheville, he served on the Groce United Methodist Church Membership Care Committee and on the Daniel Boone Council Eagle Board of Review. Dr. McClain was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Opal Cummins McClain; and his mother-in-law, Sallie R. Cummins of Knoxville. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lovvorn McClain of Asheville, NC; his sister, Jean Murphy Rhoden and husband, Dusty, of Zephryhills, FL; and his brother, Joe Allen McClain and wife, Jo Claire, of Dade City, FL. He is also survived by children Teresa Gilbert and husband, Donny, of Seymour, TN; Sally Kath and husband, Mark, of Garner, NC; William McClain, Jr. and wife, Lois, of Lawrenceville, GA; Jane Morse and husband, True, of Asheville, NC; and Debra Belvin and husband, Mark, of Oak Ridge, TN. Surviving grandchildren include Benjamin Gilbert and wife, Candace, of Knoxville, TN; Joseph Gilbert and wife, Brandi, of Seymour, TN; Maxwell, Jacob, and Cody Kath of Garner, NC; Carrick McClain and Shannon McClain of Lawrenceville, GA; Jerry Belvin of Oak Ridge, TN; Jenifer Ladd; Joanie Blackwell and husband, Nathan, of Cleveland, TN; and Nick and John Morse of Asheville, NC. Great-grandchildren include Grace Gilbert and baby Jack Gilbert (due in October), Joshua Gilbert, and William Blackwell. Dr. McClain is also survived by several nieces and nephews and other members of the extended family. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Wednesday, July 9 at 2 PM. Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to Boy Scout Troup 53 (East Asheville UMC)'for help with Troup 53 Eagle Scout Projects (checks should be made payable to Troup 53 and sent in care of Mr. True Morse, Assistant Scoutmaster, 4 Feather Drive, Asheville, NC 28805) or to the Groce United Methodist Choir Fund (checks should be made payable to Groce UMC, 954 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805). The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 8 from 6 – 8pm at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge. A Memorial Service will be held in Asheville, NC at Groce Methodist Church at a later date.
