He was born February 14, 1921 at Buxton 18, IA, son of John F. and Mary E. Stegeman Johnson. He was united in marriage to Helen C. Mellick on February 3, 1947 in Albia, IA. Read More	Obituary From The Ottumwa Courier, July 3, 2015: OTTUMWA-William J. "Bill" Johnson, 94, of Ottumwa, died July 1, 2015 at his home with family at his bedside. He was born February 14, 1921 at Buxton 18, IA, son of John F. and Mary E. Stegeman Johnson. He was united in marriage to Helen C. Mellick on February 3, 1947 in Albia, IA. Helen preceded him in death April 25, 1980. He married Margaret Dimmitt Pettit on December 4, 1982 in Lancaster, MO. Margaret preceded him in death April 18, 2003. Before transferring to the Army Air Corps, he was a Cavalry soldier in 1939, one of the last true horsemen soldiers. He served in the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force 397th Bomb Wing, flying B-26 Martin Marauders with 28 missions over Europe during WWII with 3 forced landings, and with no loss of crew. Bill had done many things, among them he was owner/operator of a Skelly Gas Station at Church and Davis Streets and B & H Grocery in Albia, Iowa. He also worked as a Wonder Bread driver, along with stints at John Deere, Metropolitan Life Insurance and Industrial Machine. He retired as a Deputy City Assessor in Ottumwa. He had said earlier that the reason he had so many jobs was because he got bored, and had a great curiosity of many different things. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Bill is survived by sons Donald Johnson of Alisa Viejo, California, William J. Jr. (Zirong Zhao) Johnson of Boyds, Maryland; John F. (Pam) Johnson of Newton, Iowa; daughters Mary Ann Mullins of Austin, Texas and Helen E. (Stephen) Baumel of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a stepdaughter Debbie (David) Truitt of Ottumwa, Iowa, a stepson Dennis (Sue) Pettit of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren Christopher (Lyndsay) Johnson of California, Carrie (Eric) Paulsen of Laguna Niguel, California, Philip and Theodore (Teddy) Johnson of Boyds, Maryland, Alex and Anna Johnson of Newton, Iowa, Renee (Lucas) Curfman of Austin, Texas, Bill Mullins of Austin, Texas, Jennifer (Caleb) Cannon of West Des Moines, Iowa, Marie Baumel of Northridge, California, step-grandchildren Daniel (Rachael) Pettit of Des Moines, Iowa, Stacey (Michael) Wilke of Iowa City, Iowa, and Stephane (Dustin) Coy of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Gavin, Ames and Cole; and 6 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, an infant Francis and Ewald Johnson and a sister, Christina Davidsaver. His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home Father Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. The family will be present one hour prior to the service to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the B-26 Marauder Lasting Legacy Campaign.
