News of his death came as a distinct shock to many of his friends and relatives. The late Mr. Newell was born in Bentinck Township, 2 1/2 miles east of Durham on Sept. 5th, 1885 He was the second eldest son of the late George Newell and Margaret Stewart. He left home when a very young man and went to Fort Arthur, where he worked for a time at his trade as a carpenter, later going to Alberta, where he took up a homestead and successfully farmed for eleven years. He disposed of his farm in 1918 and came east to purchase the Grist Mill from the late P. Loucks in 1921 where he operated for the last 23 years.. In religion he was a presbyterian. He was a member of the Durham Masonic Lodge. The late Mr. Newell was united in marriage on Nov. 29th 1922 to Annie Rosella Betts of Artemesia Township, who is left to mourn the loss of a kind and thoughtful husband, together with their three children, one son and two daughters, Florence, (Mrs. Earl Hill) of Artemesia, Marjorie and Ted at home. Deceased is also surrounded by four brothers, Jack, George and Louis of Durham and three sisters,, Jennie, (Mrs. Allan McKinnon) of Port Arthur, Christena, (Mrs. Thos. Whitmore) and Margaret, Mrs. M. Whitmore) both of Durham. Mr. Newell will be greatly missed in the neighbourhood as he was a kind and obliging neighbour and ever ready to help others. The funeral is taking place Tuesday afternoon to Flesherton, the remains will be placed in the cemetery Chapel. (Durham and Meaford Papers.
