He served in the military in Germany for four years. He married Mary C Berens, also a native of Germany, who was born in 1850. Their oldest son, William, was born in Germany. They came to America and settled first at Westphalia, then Earling. Their second son, Joseph, was born while living in that area. William purchased a farm at Portsmouth that was mostly prairie land. Mary C Heller died in 1894. William Heller, then married Mary Book, also a native of Germany, who worked as a hired girl for the Schwarte family at Westphalia. They were the parents of three children: Kathryn (1897-1968), married Nick Schechinger; Henry (1903); and John (1907). William Heller died on November 18, 1924, and his wife Mary, shortly thereafter on December 19, 1924. They are buried in St Mary's Cemetery which is adjacent to the original Heller family home place now owned by St Mary's.
