In the death of William Kelley, who died peacefully at his residence in Washington township last Thursday at 12:30p.m., Clarke county loses one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. Mr. Kelley was one of the pioneers of the county, having settled on the land he entered in 1852 and made it his home till the time of his death, a continuous residence of 53 years. He was the son of Joseph and Harriett Kelley and was born April 5, 1832 in Perry county, Ohio. He was the youngest of a family of nine children, five boys and four girls. He was married to Almira DeLong in 1856. To this union four children were born, Elizabeth, Ida, Dell and Murton. Ida, having gone on before at the early age of eight years, death again entered his home by taking from him his wife in the year 1869. He was married to the wife that survives him, and who has faithfully shared the responsibilities of his home for 34 years and tended him with unfailing affection and fidelity through his long decline and final sickness, in 1871. Three children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. The other Mrs. Maggie Farley, survives. The children present during his last illness were Murton Kelley, Mrs. Dell Houston, Mrs. Maggie Farley. Mrs. Elizabeth Sigler, who lives in California, was not able to be present. In revival meetings still remembered in Washington township, held in the Washington school house in January 1881, Mr. Kelley made a public confession of faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. He has been an active member of that church ever since, supporting its interest liberally in every way, and aiding in building the church that now stands near the schoolhouse. Before his death he spoke to his family about his religious faith, which remained unshaken to the end. During his last days his mind, which naturally was among the clearest, wandered. But his end was peaceful. In the neighborhood where Mr. Kelley lived, and among his friends in Osceola and all over the county, Mr. Kelley will be sadly missed. He had lived here so long and his character for integrity and kindness to all who had dealings with him was so well known during his more than half a century's residence on his farm, that the loss is very heavy. He was of an exceedingly hospitable nature. Nothing pleased him more than to have his friends come to see him, stay over night and enjoy the bountiful hospitality of the excellent table which his equally hospitable wife always provided, and then sit by the fireside and in social conversation spend delightful hours. He delighted to do a kindness for a neighbor. If he could accommodate anyone by putting himself out to any reasonable degree he would not hesitate to make the sacrifice. He had no enemies, and did not carry a grudge. Though a keen reader of of human nature he did not carry criticism to the point of unkind actions, but was kind even to those he thought wee wrong. The funeral was held at the church near his residence. The services were conducted by his old friend, the Rev. E.M. Buckner. The church was crowed by a large company of his neighbors. Some drove out from Osceola to do honor to the memory of the friend they had known and honored for many years. The remains were interred in the Cox cemetery. W.H. SHIPMAN
