The victim was identified a 29-year-old Kenneth Scott of Fort Benton, who died nine hours after the incident. Victor Squires, also from Fort Benton, was clawed by the bear, described as "huge." The victim was identified a 29-year-old Kenneth Scott of Fort Benton, who died nine hours after the incident. Victor Squires, also from Fort Benton, was clawed by the bear, described as "huge." Squires said Scott shot the bear with two 30-06 slugs when the animal "jumped" the party in the wilderness of western Montana. The animal escaped temporarily but the men tracked him down. Squires said he unloaded a clip of 30-30 shot into the animal and while he was reloading the bear began to attack. Squires and the victim's brother, Don, ran and they said they thought Kenneth Scott ran too. They returned to the scene minutes later, however, and found Scott seriously wounded, and the bear gone. The bear returned again while the men were treating Scott, and was felled by two more slugs in the neck.
