Description	:	From obituary, Jewell County Record, Feb. 2, 1950: "On the 20th of July 1873, the first white child was born in Odessa Township, Jewell County, Kansas in a dugout sod house. He was the son of John B. and Mary E. Sipe and was named William Kirkum. He lived on this homestead and another eighty that was bought and became a part of the home for 53 years. Even after he left the homestead in 1926 he farmed in Jewell County until he moved to Mankato n 1935. "He was married to Blanche Ruth Schlagle (sic) of Athens Township on... To this union six children were born, all of whom survive. They are John Kenneth of Mankato, Charles E. of Los Angeles, Calif., Laurence W. of Palo Alto, Calif., Willis K. of Los Angeles, Winton F. (sic) of Richmond, Virginia, and Jennie Blanche Nelson of Courtland, Kansas. "He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Ionia. It was in this community that his strongest ties wth his fellow man were felt and it was here that he was most a part of his community. He was active, however, as a worker wherever he lived. "His wife, after a long illness, preceded him in death on May 26, 1939. His two brothers, Charlie and Seth have also gone before him. His only sister, Bertha, died in very early childhood. A brother, Abe, Hebron, Neb. There are 7 grandsons and two granddaughters besides the usual number of other relatives and friends. "William Kirkum Sipe departed this life while at home in Mankato in the early morning after much suffering. "Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" was quoted at his wife's funeral and will be used here. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me. And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea."
