WILLIAM KOEHN OBSERVES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF WEDDING. ~ CHILDREN WERE ALL PRESENT ~ Family Surprised Them by Gathering For Celebration on Big Day ~ Elkport, Ia., May 14, - Special: Mr. and Mrs. William Koehn were most pleasantly surprised last Saturday by the arrival of their children from near and far the event being their 50th wedding anniversary, and the golden wedding was duly celebrated on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Koehn were married 50 years ago on Bear Creek, and lived on the farm forty-one years when they purchased their home in town where they have lived since. All the children were present at the happy reunion with their families as follows: Mrs. Augusta Jungblut, of Guttenberg, Ia., Wm. Koehn, Supt. of the County Home at Elkader, Mrs. Charles Odison, of Herman, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kemps, of Dubuque, Charles P. Koehn of Sycamore, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Will McSperrin of Sycamore, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Waterman of Elkport, Grover C. Koehn and wife of Sycamore, Ill., Geo. E. Koehn of Dubuque. The happy family includes 27 grandchildren. Mr. Wm. Koehn was born in Mecklenberg, Germany of Feb. 3, 1846 and came to this country with his parents when 3 years old and has been living in Volga Township since the end of the Civil War. Mrs. Maria Koehn was born in Germany and came to this country when she (this part is missing). Both are in good health and the community extends the couple many more returns. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dubuque Telegraph Herald- November 1, 1931 Guttenberg’s Last Survivor Of Civil War Dies Suddenly Guttenberg, Ia., Oct. 31. – Special: William Koehn, 83, the last surviving veteran of the Civil War of Guttenberg, and a pioneer resident of Clayton County, died suddenly at his home on Friday morning. Mr. Koehn was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on Feb. 3, 1848, coming to America with his parents at the age of three years. The family settled in Clayton County which has been his home ever since. At the age of 18 he enlisted for service in the Civil War, being a member of Co. E. 27th Iowa Infantry. About a year after he enlisted the war came to a close. He was married to Mary Krieg in 1869, and the couple settled on a farm in Volga Township, where they lived for forty one years. Following their retirement they first made their home at Elkport, but in 1921 came to Guttenberg. Besides his widow he is survived by nine children, Mrs. Wm. Jungblut, Guttenberg; William, Elkader; Mrs. Charles Ochsner, St. Louis, Mo.; Charles, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Charles Kemps and Mrs. Anna McSperrin, Dubuque; George, Cedar Rapids; Grover, German Valley, Ill.; and Mrs. Charles Waterman, Garber, 26 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; one brother, John Koehn, of S. Dakota. One son, Fred, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held here Sunday afternoon with interment in the city cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dubuque Telegraph Herald – November 2, 1931 Guttenberg, Ia., Nov 2. - Special: - Funeral services for William Koehn, 83, Civil War Veteran, who died Friday, were conducted by the Rev. D. D. Welsh at the Koehn home Saturday afternoon. Members of the local American Legion Post attended the funeral in body. Military services were held at the graveside in City Cemetery.
