Born in Kansas on March 5, 1928, William "Bill" Burris moved with his family across the U.S. to leave the Dust Bowl behind. Burris, 80, a longtime resident of Wenatchee, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Highline Care Center in East Wenatchee. Born in Kansas on March 5, 1928, William "Bill" Burris moved with his family across the U.S. to leave the Dust Bowl behind. Bill, along with his parents, Lloyd and Olive, his sister, Rose and brother, Red, spent the remainder of years building a good life as a Wenatchee resident. As a Wenatchee High School graduate, class of '47, Bill was employed by the Great Northern Railroad and worked until his induction into the Army during the Korean War. From 1951 to 1953, he served as an Army medic, stationed in Japan. After returning to Wenatchee, he returned to Great Northern, but in 1956, moved to the Chelan County P.U.D., where he worked until his retirement in 1985. The year of '85 was especially good for Bill, not only as a retiree, but at age 57, he found his first and only true love, his wife, Wanda, and married into an immediate family, which brought him two daughters, Kathy (Morgan) Picton and Kelley (Jerry) Wood and their respective families; and also four sons, Rodney Housden (deceased), Blaine (Becky Housden, Scott (Terrie) Housden and Jack (Kathy) Weeks and their families. Bill and his wife, Wanda lived for many years on Union Street in East Wenatchee, where they had designed and built their own home, while raising an apple orchard, squeezing in cross-country RV trips and entertaining large family gatherings. He was a member of Riverside Lodge F. & A.M. and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Bill was a man of many talents and will be remembered for his avid interest in the outdoors, which included hunting, fishing, hiking and huckleberry picking. He earned a solid reputation as a burro wrangler, as he raised burros for himself and also helped others train good packers. Although not real tall, Uncle Bill was quick and sure in the orchard with his ladder and pack, so became the secret tool for topping the trees picked by his nephews and nieces, so Grandpa Lloyd would pay them. In addition, he became famous for carrying on the familys vegetable garden tradition that filled everybodys stomach at all family gatherings, especially reunions and camp trips. Not only would Bill provide most of the food, but he could cook all of it to perfection. During several annual hunting trips, he taught Red, Tim and Wayne how to slow cook the perfect roast in a fire pit, using the ol Dutch Oven. His special treats will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his wife, Wanda, who would have celebrated 24 years of marriage on February 15th of this year; his sister, Rose Trotter and husband, Don of Vancouver, WA; his brother, Red Burris and wife, Nancy of Spokane, WA; nieces, Linda and Jan; nephew, Tim, 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several grandnephews and grandnieces. The buddies he leaves with us, John Leibole of Arizona and Jerry Moro, will continue to teach us the appreciation of the great outdoors. After a lengthy and debilitating disease, it is good to know that Bill is probably exchanging fishing stories with his friends, Lloyd Keagle, Alfred Dechand, Bob McKinley and George Weeks. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Doug; and stepson, Rodney. Services will be conducted Friday, February 13, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Jones & Jones ~ Betts Memorial Chapel, with Chaplain Scott Langager officiating. Interment will follow at Wenatchee City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to "Our House" or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Services have been entrusted to Jones & Jones ~ Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee.
