William was born May 5, 1934 in North Bend, Nebraska to Luke C. and Ruth (Catherwood) Gaughen. Bill was a 1952 graduate of Cedar Bluffs High School. He enjoyed playing basketball and football. William was born May 5, 1934 in North Bend, Nebraska to Luke C. and Ruth (Catherwood) Gaughen. Bill was a 1952 graduate of Cedar Bluffs High School. He enjoyed playing basketball and football. Bill married JoAnn Nelson on June 5, 1955 at St. James Episcopal Church in Fremont. He was employed by Hormel’s for thirty years, retiring in 1987. He loved every minute of his retirement. Bill had a great love of horses. He owned and raced thoroughbreds around the Nebraska circuit with his friend and mentor, Herb Riecken. His biggest thrill was to have several wins at Aksarben and to win “Best 2 year old of 1980.” He loved to travel and take cruises, but he especially loved driving his beloved red 2001 Town & Country to South Padre where they stayed during January and February and going to Chicago and Mesa to see Sammy Sosa and the Cubs. He was always ready to hop in the van and visit his children and grandchildren, never failing to stop at his much loved McDonalds. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Fremont. He taught Sunday School and coached church basketball. He was a Lay reader and member of the vestry. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Fremont, UFCW in Fremont, and a former Jaycee member. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, JoAnn of Fremont; daughters, Laurie (Rod) Poeschl of Greeley, Colorado, Brenda (Scott) Wendt of Indianola, Iowa and Jayne (Allen) Bell of Fremont; sisters, Marge (Leon) Rabe of Fremont and Kathy (Tom) Stranik of Morse Bluff; brother-in-law, Jerry Wedergren of Fremont; grandchildren, Chad (Beth) Poeschl, Erica (Darren) Davis, Luke (Ariel) Friese, Noah (Amy) Friese, Haylee (Dan) Bergeland, Lindsey Benson, Nichole (Junior) Barrios, Drake and Madison Bell; great grandchildren, Nate Rankin, Emma Poeschl, Wyatt, McKenna and Tyler Benson, Magnolia Bergeland, Lane and Liam Friese, Braden and Brynn Barrios; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Pat Wedergren. Memorial service will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at St. James Episcopal Church in Fremont. The Rev. Mother Sarah Miller will officiate. Memorial visitation will be Monday from 5 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8PM. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. James Episcopal Church." Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont, Nebraska.
