Description	:	William Lee Carpenter, Sr., 76, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant. A graveside memorial service for Mr. Carpenter will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 13 at the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Pastor Walt Graffam of the First Assembly of God Church, Mt. William Lee Carpenter, Sr. was born June 6, 1938 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Stace and Lola (née Ross) Carpenter. His mother died when he was an infant. Bill was raised by his aunt Nell Carpenter. He later rejoined his father and stepmother, Laura. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1956. On December 4, 1970 in Okinawa, Japan, William was united in marriage to Kinue G. “Kim” Goeku. Mr. Carpenter made a career in the United States Army. He served in the Infantry and in the 30th Artillery. As his career advanced, he was with Air Defense Artillery Operations & Intelligence Assistance and was a HAWK Missile Crew Member. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class at Ft. Monroe, VA on March 31, 1982 and was transferred to the United States Army Reserve Corps in St. Louis Missouri. During his career, he received numerous awards including the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service and Overseas Service Ribbons, the 1st Class Missileman Bar and the Meritorious Service Medal. Bill returned to Mt. Pleasant and for 13 years, was a guard at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Institute, from which he retired. Bill was a Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2561, a member of the American Legion Robert Tribby Post #58 and the AMVETS Post #44 all of Mt. Pleasant. In his spare time, Bill was involved in numerous activities that included watching stories about the Army and football games. He was also a very generous volunteer for numerous activities and helping clean the yards of his neighbors. Those thankful for sharing in Bill’s life include his wife Kim of Mt. Pleasant; 2 sons, William L. Carpenter, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant and John Carpenter of Denver, CO; 2 daughters, Stacia Roberts of Texas and Rebecca Rogers of Seattle, WA; 1 brother, Jim Carpenter of the Quad Cities, IL, and Matty DeWitt of Keokuk, IA; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. His parents, stepmother, and his aunt who raised him preceded him in death.
