"I have no fears," he said to a newspaper correspondent who called to find him ill and confined to his bed. "I have lived it through; it has been very short and now I am ready for the long rest." "I do not," he continued, "approach the end with the slightest feeling of gloom. I see the approaching end as I have seen it all my life - in a spirit of good cheer. I have bought my coffin, not from any whimsical or sentimental notion, but simply to be ready, and, further, that no extravagance may be practiced in the burial of my body. The former mayor not only bought his own coffin, but has provided one for his wife, and both coffins are at hand and ready for use. "I crave, said the former mayor, "only one thing, so far as the public is concerned, and that is that whatever may be said in the press concerning my death, due recognition be given to my persistent and successful efforts while at the head of the city government, to rid the community of the lawless element. What I did to stop gambling and to rid the town of houses of ill repute are matters which have brought me great satisfaction." It must be said to his credit that he established lasting reforms along the lines indicated, and that in spite of a feeling of distrust, when he took the oath of office for the first time, he convinced the city council and the public that he was indeed and in truth a law-enforcement executive.
