From Nevada Journal October 24, 1938 Last Rites Held Friday Afternoon for W. L. Lobaugh Funeral rites for W. L. Lobaugh, 75, of 325 K avenue, were held at the Nevada Church of Christ of which the deceased had long been an active spirit, Friday afternoon at 2:30, after which the body was laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery. The Church was filled to capacity by relatives and old neighbors and friends, many of them coming a considerable distance. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, testifying in their tender way as the high esteem in which Mr. Lobaugh was held. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Horras, Mrs. Bierma and Mrs. Bierschwal. The service was in charge of the pastor Rev. C. V. Pense who spoke in a most touching manner of the man with whom he has so long been associated in work of the church. The singers selected from members of the church and Sunday school were H. D. Patterson, Rev. Palmarton, Mr. Satterlee, Mrs. Lee Cook, Mrs. Pence, Mrs. McGriff and Mrs. Satterlee. Mrs. T. B. Warren was at the piano. Pallbearers were J. W. Cook, T. B. Warren, C. L. Bierschwal, Lee Cook, Ike Tudor and A. L. Boten. The following life sketch of Mr. Lobaugh was read by the pastor during the service: W. L. Lobaugh was born Feb. 22, 1863 in Peoria, Ill, and passed away Oct. 17, 1938 in Nevada, Iowa, age 75 years, 7 months and 25 days. On Feb. 22, 1887, he was united in marriage to Lily B. Young of Arrasmith, Ill. The immediate living relatives are: The wife, Mrs. W. L Lobaugh, and two sons Marlie and Harold; five grandchildren: Marlie's three sons, Clifford, Donald and Phillip; Harold's two sons, Lewellyn adn Haynes; son sister, Jennie Kirkpatrick, 81 years old living in Arrasmith, Ill, and also several nieces, and other distant relatives. In 1893, W. L. Lobaugh moved to Story county, iowa where he purchased a farm in Richland township. Here he lived and farmed for 38 years. During the last twelve years of his life, he made his home in Nevada. Throughout his life, he was actively engaged in many farming and rural interest. He took an active part in all public affairs, also in the work of the Story county Farm Bureau, and at the time of his death, was member of the Corn Sealing Board. He was always ready to do his bit in assisting a brother farmer. He also gave of his time and efforts to the work of the public schools having served for several years as member of the Boeard of Education of the Fernald schools. In his teens, W. L. Lobaugh united with the church and throughout these many years has been exceptionally active in all church activities. When he came to Story county, he was instrumental in the erection of the Church of Christ edifice, and later in the building of the Chruch of Christ parsonage. He was a Charter member of the church and his name appears on the cornerstone of the church. Throughout his entire life, his greatest desire and his greatest interest was the church. For many many years he has been a Sunday school teacher. Throughout the life of the church, Brother Lobaugh was the leading elder always looking after the best welfare of the church. Since the beginning of the church, he has been either the Treasurer or on the Finance Committee. Always has be contributed abundantly and more. In many many instances where the treasury was low, he has paid the bills of the church, quietly and secretly, so earnest was he that our church must carry on. The wonderful Christian character of W. L. Lobaugh as he lived his life in ths Church of Christ in Nevada will always be the one bright an shining light in the history of our church. His life has always been filled with faithfulness, with Christian duty and with the love of Christ. It will be almost impossible to fill his place in our church life. We can only pray that his great spirited mantle may fall on shoulders able and willing to bear the load. His life has been and still is an Open Book. Relatives and friends from a distance here for the service included the only sister Mrs. Jennie Kirkpatrick who was home from Arrasmith, Ill. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark, Mrs. Hazel Morman and daughter, Russel Helnes, Mrs. Ethel Wheeler, from Illinois, Mr and Mrs. Orville Wampler of Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wampler of Colo, Mr. and Mrs. John Eastman and Mrs. Maizie Eastman of St. Anthony; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clark of Paton and O. J. Johnson of Liscomb. Many others were here from Ames and various central Iowa points.
