Description	:	William Louis Eckles, 101, the son of Samuel E. Eckles and Harriet Anderson, was born Dec. 16, 1896, at Rural Merryville, Mo. He died Monday at Superior. In 1917 he served in the United States Army as... Read More	William Louis Eckles, 101, the son of Samuel E. Eckles and Harriet Anderson, was born Dec. 16, 1896, at Rural Merryville, Mo. He died Monday at Superior. He moved to Nelson when he was six years old. He attended rural Nelson schools. At 18, he started laying wire for the Nuckolls County Independent Telephone System. He was in the phone business for 30 years. His job with the telephone company took him to several places. They lived in Hastings, Edgar, Wilber and he retired at Plattsmouth. In 1917 he served in the United States Army as a member of the Signal Corps. He was stationed for the most part in France. Before his death he was the only World War I veteran still alive in Nuckolls County. On July 25, 1921, he married Verna Grace Littrell. The couple had five children. After retiring from the telephone company he co-owned E &L Electric for about two years. He was skilled at woodworking. Most of his hand-made furniture is now in his children's homes. He is a charter member of the American Legion in Nelson and had 76 years of membership. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dewey and Harry Eckles; and three sisters, Nelle Gourley, Freeda Brown and Fern Daniels. He is survived by his wife, Verna, of the Good Samaritan Center, Nelson; his five children, Mrs. Gerald Pittam (Betty), Mill City, Ore., Phillip, Nelson, Mrs. Robert McCutchan (Maxine), Nelson, William, Lincoln, Neb., and John, Benedict; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Services are today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. from the Klawitter-Price Funeral Home Chapel, Nelson. The Rev. Ralph Sturdy will officiate. Interment with military rites by the Nelson American Legion will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Superior Express, Thursday, March 26, 1998 -------------------------
