Marriage to Nancy Emeline Spangler in December, 1885 * * * * * DEATH: 19 January, 1903: OBITUARY from The Herald, Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, IA: 12 Feb 1903 ~ "William Cratty died after an illness of only four or five hours, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Goodrich, near Brighton, California, having been seized with severe pains in the upper part of the chest. He had been more or less afflicted with such pains since having had asthma for a number of years, the trouble perhaps being with the heart or aorta. The remains were shipped here for interment, accompanied on the long, sad journey by the devoted wife and the loving grand daughter. The remains arrived Saturday evening and the funeral was held from the home of his son, W. H. Cratty, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Rev. Trump, the pastor of the deceased, officiating. William, son of James and Christina (Carr) Cratty, was born June 26, 1826, in Delaware County, Ohio. Died near Brighton, California, Jan. 19, 1903. The early part of his life was spent on a farm. After his father's death he worked in a tannery for two years; but this not agreeing with him, he learned the carpenter trade, at which he worked for many years. During the six years succeeding the war, he traveled for a marble firm in Iowa. Later he engaged in business in Elgin, from which he retired some ten years ago on account of failing strength. His home was in Ohio until 1855, when he moved to Indianapolis, Iowa, where he resided until 1862 when he enlisted in Company E, 33d Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served his country well until he was honorably discharged in January, 1865. He then lived in Oskaloosa, Iowa, until 1882, when he came to Antelope county, Nebr., where he took a homestead near Elgin. Since 1889 he has resided in Elgin, but was called to his reward while on a visit to his daughter in California, where he went to spend the winter in a milder climate. January 20, 1852, he was married to Miss Mary Hunter, who departed this life Nov. 30, 1879. To them were born the following children: Loretta (Mrs. D. H. Woomer), James, Alice (Mrs. J. L. Totten), William, Ella (Mrs. L. Goodrich) and Charles. December 24, 1885, he was again married to Mrs. Emeline Spangler, who with all his children, survives. In early manhood, when not more than eighteen years of age, he gave his heart to God and his name to the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a consistent member until death."
