He was a widower, and, although amply provided for, owning a good farm, he became restless, downcast and morose with the weight of years, and concluded the only relief lay in the grave. Evidently the unfortunate and rash act was premeditated for some time. Mr. Dillinger, during Tuesday afternoon, secured a shot gun that belonged to the place, loaded it heavily, and went to the barn. Seating himself upon the doorstep he cut a notch in his cane, placed it against the trigger, mid looking into the muzzle of the weapon pushed the trigger. Hearing the report relatives came to the barn where the almost headless body of the old gentleman was found, the shot having literally blown the head from the trunk. Mr. Dillinger was one of the oldest settlers in this section, having moved here in 1853, and was known throughout this and Carroll county. He was a man almost universally esteemed and respected, and a prominent figure in the section where he had lived for more than 49 years. At the time of going to press we are unable to learn further details, or facts, concerning him. October 17, 1896 - The Souvenir - Kendrick township is the scene of a suicide this week the victim being an old resident by the name of Dillinger. He came here in an early day and settled down to farming and made it a successful business and at the time of his demise was in very comfortable circumstances. The rash act was done during a temporary fit of insanity. He took a gun and went to his barn placing the gun against his head and touching the trigger with a forked stick. Mr. Dillinger had recently been in Arkansas and other points South and seemed to be much improved in health and vigor since returning.
