Read More	Copied from the Fontanelle, Iowa Town Observer; April 28, 1938: William Rafter, pioneer, died here last Sunday; William Rafter, a pioneer settler, of Adair County, son of Philip and Sophronia Coldron Rafter was born in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa on March 16, 1867, their home standing on the grounds where the State Capitol is now located. As a boy of four he moved with his parents to Madison County near Winterset, where they lived until 1872. In that year they moved to Adair County, locating on a farm 1 1/2 miles south of fontanelle, then known as the Gow farm. A year later they moved 4 1/2 miles north of Fontanelle locating on a farm which was the family home for many years. Here he worked as a boy with his brothers, herding cattle on the prarie, later farming with them until 1910 when he and brother John moved to South Dakota, taking a claim in the Rosebud Reservation. In 1916 they returned to their home place north of Fontanelle, where William lived until the passing of his brother, John. In 1920 he moved to Fontanelle and his sister Abbie made her home with him until her death. In 1931 he shared his home with his niece, Mrs. Ida Belle Longacre. The next year they moved to the home place living there two years. After weeks of suffering he departed this life on Sunday April 24, 1938 at the age of 71 years, one month and 8 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jonathan, Charlie, John, Clinton, and Philip; also 3 sisters, Abbie, Louise and Laura. Mr. Rafter was a quiet, unassuming man, kind-hearted and upright in all dealings with his fellow men. He was a good neighbor and friend and will be greatly missed in the community where he made his home for 60 years.
