Mrs. J. T. Scott, Teacher, is Dead Rites for Jonesville Woman to Be Conducted Sunday at School Auditorium Jonesville, May 6 -- Mrs. John T. Scott, 55, the former Miss William Margaret Southard, died at her home on Main street here early this morning. She was the daughter of the late Dr. William O. Southard and Sallie Bates Southard. Mrs. Scott had been ill since December when she underwent an operation at Vanderbilt hospital, Nashville, Tenn. Her condition had been serious for the past several months. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the auditorium of the high school. This request was made by friends of Mrs. Scott as the auditorium has a larger seating capacity than the Baptist church. The Rev. E. E. Hite, pastor of Jonesville Baptist church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Mr. W. H. Polk, pastor of the Jonesville Methodist church, the Rev. J. M. Rast, Columbia, and the Rev. J. L. Singleton, Lexington, former pastors of the Jonesville Methodist church, and the Rev. L. M. Rice of Union, a lifelong friend of Mrs. Scott. Mrs. Scott is survived by her husband; six children, Mrs. B. B. Stokes, Atlanta, GA, Mrs. E. E. Gilliam, and Miss Josephine Scott, New York City, John T. Scott, Jr., Etawah, Tenn, Dr. W. S. Scott, Butterworth hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich., and James Scott, a medical student at Vanderbilt hospital, Nashville, Tenn; two sisters, Mrs. Mary S. Geer, of Jonesville, and Mrs. Caroline Southard; one brother, Lawrence G. Southard; one grandson, B. B. Stokes, young son of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Stokes. After completing high school in Jonesville, Mrs. Scott entered Winthrop college, and throughout her college career was an outstanding student. She was first president of the Winthrop chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was largely instrumental in its organization. After graduation she taught two years at Denmark, S.C. In 1903 she was married to John T. Scott. She assisted in organizing the John Hames chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy here, and was president of the Woman's Misionary society a number of times. She was choir leader of the Jonesville Baptist church for the past 30 years. Mrs. Scott was among the oldest members in membership of the Baptist church here. For the past 20 years she had taught the Baraca class, which at one time had an enrollment of 150 men. For the past 18 years Mrs. Scott has been connected with the Jonesville school as teacher, principal of the grammar school and superintendent. During her years as superintendent, the school made many advances. She was devoted to her chosen profession and returned to it after returning from Nashville in January but was forced to give it up after a few days. She was once president of the Union County Teachers Association and had served as an officer in the South Carolina Teachers Association for many years. Mrs. Scott attended Columbia University summer school 10 years and held a masters degree from Wofford College. She had done considerable work at Columbia University toward her Ph. D. degree. She was the present president of the Book club. For the past several years she had been a Democratic committeewoman from Union county. Honorary pallbearers at the funeral will be: J. C. Cudd, J. C. Brown, F. E. Spears, H. T. Hames, J. M. Lemon, E. H. Wilkens, J. M. Gault, W. G. White, James H. Webber, R. C. Little, R. A. Lybrand and T. A. Littlejohn. Active pallbearers: T. A. Waldrip, A. B. Moss, C. L. Dixon, T. E. Rector, Guy Mason, Dave G. Coleman, C. M. Putnam and James A. Harmon.
