Cavalry. -------------- William Matzke of Milford, Civil War veteran who aided in the capture of Jefferson Davis, former president of the Confederate states, near Dublin, Georgia, on May 10, 1865, died at his home at Milford last Thursday, and funeral services were held at Calvary Evangelical church at Milford at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. R. Rembolt officiating. He was about 83 years of age. The deceased had lived in the Milford vicinity for fifty-five years, and is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters. Stanley F. Matzke, county attorney of Seward county, is a grandson. An account of Mr. Matzke's participation in the capture of of Davis was published in the Independent April 12, 1928. He had served during the war as a member of Co. D, 1st Wisconsin calvalry. Delegations of picked men from different regiments had been sent out to capture Davis duirng the early part of 1865, including 75 men from his own regiment, and 125 from a Michigan regiment. These two squads met near Dublin, Georgia, and mistaking each other for the enemy, engaged in a conflict in which several were killed and wounded. Davis was in camp near where the skirmish took place, and had presumably been trailed to his camp. He had no armed men with him, and his capture was not difficult after he had been located. Henry M. Miller died at Greensburg, Indiana about a year ago, and it was stated in the papers that he was the last survivor of those who took part in the capture of Davis. He served in a Pennsylvania regiment, and while he may have been sent out with other members of his regiment to capture Davis, his squad was not present when the actual capture took place. A reward of $100,000 had been offered for Davis' capture, and this was divided among the members of the Wisconsin and Michigan regiments. Matzke received $300 for it.
