He was born to Victor and Dorothy Chase Starling on February 18, 1928 in Rufus, Oregon and spent his childhood and formative years in Plains, Montana. He married Carole Nelson who died in 1986. Bill and Virginia Ries were married in 1988 and settled in Eugene. Bill's professional career began as a teacher, after which he spent several years in the ministry. In the years following he returned to school and earned a doctorate in education from the University of Oregon. Bill served in the Eugene School District as the Cadre coordinator, later moving to the classroom as a teacher, and then as a counselor. He developed a 'peer conflict management' program for school children to help them learn how to solve interpersonal problems. His program was widely admired in the school district, and has been an effective tool in education circles. One of Bill's extra-curricular activities was composing poems for one occasion or another, or for someone celebrating a birthday. He always had the knack for finding just the right words and rhyming scheme to bring a laugh or a smile from his audience. Bill was a magnificent gardener; there was no end to his creativity with flowers and plants, and his garden was admired by all who had the pleasure of wandering through it. Bill lives in our hearts as a kind and compassionate man. His strength of spirit, his love of God, his wisdom, laughter and wit, his fairness, selflessness and inspiration have given us the joy of knowing him and being in his presence. Bill was active as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and the SMART reading program, contributing his time and talent to these efforts. After retirement Bill and Ginny spent several wonderful years traveling the globe. Bill is survived by his wife, Ginny, Bill's five children, Jan, Gregory, Nathan, Pamela, and Rhonda, and three grandchildren, Lily, Sophia and Marisa; also brother Nate, and sisters Dot and Jeanne, and by Ginny's children Chip and Peter, and seven grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at First Congregational Church on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 2:00pm. Remembrances may be made to Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity, Nature Conservancy and Oregon Public Broadcasting.
