McAuliff died at bis home in Preston township on Friday morning last. The end came suddenly although he had been in ill health for the past year or two, suffering greatly from inflammatory rheumatism complicated by heart trouble. He had been in Sioux City at a hospital for several weeks undergoing treatment but returned to his home a week before the end came. He had been feeling somewhat better the few days prior to his death and on Friday morning was sitting at the breakfast table, eating some soup, when be was stricken, and expired iu a few minutes. William McAuliff was born in County Cork, Ireland, on November 6, 1839, and was one of nine children born to Thomas and Mary McAuliff. He came of good old Irish stock, his ancestors being land holders for several generations. His parents emigrated to the United States in the year following his birth and for some years made their home at Syracuse, N. Y. From there they moved to Chicago and after living there four years they moved to Green County, Wisconsin, where he lived for thirty years. He was united in marriage at Monroe, Wis., with Miss Jane Lewis, July 4, 1891. To them four children were born. They are Mrs. Phil Hayden, William L. George and Leslie, who all reside in this county. Mr. McAuliff left Wisconsin for a period daring the rush to the gold fields and tried bis fortunes in California with the Argonauts. He was engaged in mining and later as superintendent of a ranch. When the tocsin of war rang through the land he, like scores of other young men, left his work and hastened to take up arms in defense of the Union. He served in Company K. Sixth Wisconsin infantry. After the war he returned to Green county, and In 1871 came to Plymouth county, homesteading a farm in Preston township, and for thirty two years has been engaged In farming. By hard work perseverance and indomitable energy he overcame the difficulties and trials which beset the early settler. Through the long dreary winters, and t h e torrid summers he labored faithfully and what was a barren prairie thirty years ago is now one of the finest and most fertile farms in the golden northwest. He gave his children the advantages of education, and had the satisfaction of seeing them grow op to be useful and honored members in the community. In all his labors, through the dark hours, and in the sunshine of happiness his wife has been a loving and devoted consort. Besides his immediate family he leaves a brother and three sisters. They are John McAuliff who is postmaster at Aredale, in Butler county, Iowa. Mrs. James Kelly, Mrs. M. A. Doyle, Dumont, and Mrs. Thos. Mahoney, Milwaukee. The two first came to attend tho funeral. The deceased was a member of the Masonic order, being a member of tbe Blue lodge at Ireton. He was also a Royal " Arch Mason and Knight Templar, being a member of Occidental Chapter and Plymouth Commander of this city. William McAuliff was a whole souled, generous and broadminded man. He observed the golden rule in his dealings with bis fellow men, and enjoyed the respect and esteem in the community where he had lived so long and which he had helped to build up. The funeral was held at the Johnson township church on Sunday afternoon and was very largely attended. Bev. Linn, of Ireton, preached the sermon, and the members of Sioux Lodge A. F . and A. M. took charge of the services at the grave. Many from LeMars attended the funeral and escorts of honor from the Royal Arch chapter and the Plymouth Commandery paid reverence to the memory of their dead comrade.
