"Uncle Billy Moore" as he was called by all our older residents, has been ill the past month. His illness originated with stomach and bowel trouble; the latter became very severe and from that trouble he got no relief. During the entire month's illness he did not take enough food to make one meal, and during the last five days ne could not take so much as a spoonful of water. he was conscious all the while, however, and conversed freely with family and friends until the last two days when he was only able to speak in a whisper. Mr. Moore was a native of Indiana. FP was hnrn in Putnam county, near Green Castle. He was 74 years of age last month. When but ten years of age he came to Iowa with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moore, and settled in this county. They commenced at once to blaze out the way and erected their home four miles southeast of this Pit". At tht time there was n-±1-,ing here but a wet prairie, and no such a place as Washington. The deceased was one of the men who helped stake off the town of Washington. He lived on the land that was entered from the government by his father until three years ago when he moved to southeast Washington. "Uncle Billy" always figured at old settlers meetings. He always helped plan and work for the success of the meetings. A meeting was never missed by him. At the meeting to be held next month he will be sadly missed. Mr. Moore would tell of things that had happened in the early history of the county better than anyone else. After the family had been here two years they were given notice by the Indians to leave. A similar notice was given to the other four white families in the neighborhood. The Indians had always told the Moores that they were on friendly terms with them. At first when notice was being served on the other whites they told the Moores they could remain. But when the day of departure came they rode up to the Moore home and told them to leave also. They went south in the vicinity of what is now known as New London, where they remained a few months and then returned and were never afterward molested by the redskins. In fact there were never any massacres in this part of the state, so the old settlers tell us. Upon their return the home of Richard Moore was the only one for miles around that had not been burned by the tribes then living here. The deceased was a farmer by occupation and a man of sterling worth. He was neighborly and sociable, always willing to assist and help those in distress. His Christian character will shine for years and years after he is gone. Mr. Moore was born Aug. 27, 1826 in Putman county, Indiana. He was married in 1853 to Miss Cyntha A. Thompson. By this union there were ten children: Richard F., of Wellman; Mrs. Ezra Eckerman, of Nira; Rebecca A., James L., Mrs. H. M. Gray, Chas. D., Mrs. Norman Pratt, Sarah A. died in spring of 1885. Jesse T. and Mrs. Wm. Caldwell of this place. The funeral services were held this afternoon at two o'clock at Pleasant Hill church. It was quite appropriate that the funeral services be held at that place, as Mr. Moore was one of the founders of the church and has been an elder ever since its organization. There never was a more ardent and faithful worker than Mr. Moore in the denomination of the Christian church. Rev. C. E. Hunt of Eldon, preached the funeral discourse, and notwithstanding the bad weather the services were largely attended by a host of acquaintances. The remains were laid to rest in Pleasant Hill cemetery. (The following newspaper clipping was found but from what source is not specified, nor date of publication.) Another Pioneer Gone William Moore is dead. He died Sunday, after a long and painful illness. He had suffered greatly for a good many weeks, but he had been going down for more than a year. Indeed, he never got over the great sorrow of the loss of his wife a few years ago. He was never 'tn.:self after her death and one could see from time to sane that he was failing. He was bedfast for several months and lately --as unable to take any nourishment whatever and literal starved to death. He was one of the best known men in the county and was a prominent figure at all Old Settlers' meetings for many years. He will be greatly missed at those interesting meetings. He was born in Indiana, August 27, 1826. In 136, they moved to Iowa and located on the farm he occupied till year or two ago, when he moved to town. He held the original deed from the government and if we err not, he told us not long ago that there was not a scratch of a pen against it, an unusual record. William Moore was one of the best men that ever lived; he knew no mean thing. He was the soul of honor and integrity. If he told a neighbor that he would do a thing, that was the last concern anyone need have. It would be done. He never grew rich, he did not want to be rich; he always had plenty and his family a large one, was well cared for. What more care had he? If all men were like Mr. Moore, there would be no use in courts or laws restraining people from wrong doing. We shall always regret that he did not write in some permanent form his recollections of the early days He has told us incidents as thrilling as any of Cooper' tales. He lived among the Indians and in youth could talk a good deal of their language. And he had a remarkable memory for the old days. But he is no more. What a noble legacy he leaves his family, an honored and respected name. The children are Richard at Nira, Mrs. Ezra Eckerman at Mira, James, Mrs. Henry Gray, Charley, Jesse, "Doc", Mrs. Norman Pratt, Mrs. Wm. Caldwell in this county and one daughter Rebecca at home. The funeral was held Monday, interment being at Pleasant Hill, where he sleeps by the side of her whom he fondly cherished in life. His was a life to be emulated by him who would lead a blameless life.
