Description	:	Story from Shelton History: Jack Campbell [sheriff and county assessor in 1867 but lost reelection] settled on Grass Creek and not long after, a land boundary dispute developed into a bitter feud with William and his father Moses. Many threats were exchanged and the smoldering feud finally reached a climax when Jack Campbell and William Kirkland met on the beach west of the Hoquiam River mouth. Many threats were exchanged and the smoldering feud finally reached a climax when Jack Campbell and William Kirkland met on the beach west of the Hoquiam River mouth. There was an exchange of words, Kirkland finally shooting Campbell with a large revolver. He fired several shots into Campbell's body, then went to Montesano and surrendered himself. In his trial, Kirkland claimed he had fired in self-defense after Campbell had menaced him with a large club. The trial resulted in Kirkland's being sentenced to forty-five years in the penitentiary. After the trail the entire Moses Kirkland family left the Grays Harbor country and settled in the Skokomish Valley of Mason County, where William Kirkland eventually joined them. [William did not serve his full sentence.] ---------------------- William died two days after he wrote his will. He gave everything to his father Moses. ---------------------- OBIT: Died in Shelton, Thursday, Jan. 22 of consumption, William M. Kirkland, aged 56 years. The deceased has been sick since August and steadily failing for a month past, staying in town for the doctor's care. He leaves several brothers and his father, a hardy old gentleman of 86 years who resides on a farm on the Skokomish River. Aaron, a brother of the deceased, was called and was with him in his last moments. The funeral services were held in the church Friday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. J. E. Sanders, and the remains interred in the Shelton Cemetery. Mason County Journal, January 30, 1891 -------------------- Even though his obit says he is in the Shelton Cemetery, they have no record of him.
