Description	:	William J Brunquest was born March 19th, 1819, in St. George, New Brunswick. He came to what would soon become Oconto County, WI in 1849. He married Mary Ellen Messenett and then had his first child, Mary Eliza in 1853. Sadly, his wife died that same year. He married his second wife Julia Hanscom and had two sons Frank H in 1866 and William N in 1870. He worked by the month at the lumber business then entered into partnership with James and T. W. Christie in a saw-mill at Oconto Falls for a year.in 1852, he opened a general... Read More	William J Brunquest was born March 19th, 1819, in St. George, New Brunswick. He came to what would soon become Oconto County, WI in 1849. He married Mary Ellen Messenett and then had his first child, Mary Eliza in 1853. Sadly, his wife died that same year. He married his second wife Julia Hanscom and had two sons Frank H in 1866 and William N in 1870. He worked by the month at the lumber business then entered into partnership with James and T. W. Christie in a saw-mill at Oconto Falls for a year.in 1852, he opened a general store, which he continued until 1862, when he bought Jones' water-mill and ran it until 1869, when it was carried away. In 1870, he rebuilt the mill, and ran it until 1874. In 1876, he again opened a store but ended in bankruptcy by 1878. William also worked in the government of Oconto County as well. In 1852, he became Oconto County's first Register of Deeds and in 1861 he was a clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Oconto County. He was also elected as the first County Treasurer of Oconto and as President of the Oconto Village Board. He built his mansion in the City of Oconto; later this would become the home of Wisconsin Governor Edward Scofield. Around 1900 he relocated to the city of Menominee, MI where he ran a grocery store until he died from pneumonia on 27 November 1902. He was buried on 27 November 1902 in Riverside Cemetery, Menominee, MI. He was survived by his wife Julia and two sons Frank and William. Contributor: Snowflower (50775185)
