Mr. Roberts came here when Randolph had three or four houses and hed seen the country grow from the wild prairie to a community of well improved farms with fine live stock, good roads and a well settled prosperous community. Mr. Roberts was a quiet man who loved his home and his children and was known best by his neighbors. For the past several years he has been in town very seldom. A man of sturdy physique he had the strength to endure the hard work of the pioneer, but disease and the weight of 81 years broke down his strength and for some eight months he was in failing health. William N. Roberts was born in Holyhead, Wales, March 10, 1844, and departed this life April 1, 1925, aged 81 years and 22 days. As a young man of 19 he came to America in 1863 and settled in Wisconsin where he lived for 9 years and in 1872 came to Saunders County, Nebraska. At Christmas time in 1875 he returned to his native country of Wales and in the spring of 1876 returned to America, bringing his parents with him and the lived at Fremont, Nebraska. For several years Mr. Roberts was a mail carrier between Columbus and Beatrice and many times had to swim his pony across the Platte river. Those were strenuous days when our state was undergoing the transition to greater things. On February 28, 1882, Mr. Roberts was married to Josephine Lewis at Cedar Bluff, Nebraska, and after two years, or 1884, they moved to Atkinson, where he took up a homestead and lived there four years and came to Randolph in the spring of 1888. He has lived in this vicinity since that time, and for 26 years on his home place northeast of Wareham. Deceased leaves seven children, four sons and three daughters: Mrs. Beulah Taylor, Earl Roberts, Spencer Roberts, Mrs. Blanche Evans, Harvey Roberts, Mrs. Sylvie Taylor and Clarence Roberts. He also leaves 16 grandchildren, two brothers, Richard and Hugh Roberts of Wahoo, Nebraska and a half-sister, Mrs. Jennie Watson of Moscow, Idaho. His wife passed away in 1905. The funeral was held last Friday afternoon at the M. E. church, attended by all his children and many old friends. Rev. Carmony conducted the services.
