The funeral is to be held at the First M.E. church, Friday at 2 p.m. William Oldham was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, February 8, 1834, and his earlier years were spent in that state. He came to Iowa when still a young man and was in the northwestern part of the state at the time of the Sioux uprising and the massacre at Spirit Lake. The lady whom he afterward married was one of the captives at the time of this tragic event but made her escape from her Indian captors and found her way back to the white settlements. We have been unable at this writing to secure the date and place of his marriage nor the maiden name of the bride but in the early sixties they came to Carroll county and made their home here their post office address at the first being old Carrollton. After the county seat was moved to Carroll, Mr. Oldham and his wife became residents of this city, where the wife died. In 1875 he was married a second time to Mrs. Catherine Reynolds, of Carroll, who also preceded him in death. In recent years he has been making his home with his step-daughter, Mrs. F.W. Lawrence, at the corner of Court and Seventh streets. His occupation in the earlier years of his life was farming, but when he came to Carroll he engaged in the draying business in which he continued until about ten years ago, when advancing years made it necessary for him to give up active work. Mr. Oldham was born of Quaker parentage but for the past forty years has been a member of the First M.E. church of Carroll and a constant attendant at its services until sickness made such attendance impossible. He was devout in his worship and consistently lived a life of rectitude and integrity in all his dealings. He has been a member for 20 years of the Masonic fraternity and the lodge will have charge of the services at the grave. Mr. Oldham had no children and the only surviving member of his family is a sister, Mrs. Rachel Heitchew, residing at Reitz, Pa. A nephew, Mr. Joe Oldham, of Payette, Idaho, accompanied by his wife, visited Mr. Oldham in Carroll about two weeks ago, being on their way to the old home in Pennsylvania. It had been intended that he should accompany them on the train but his physical condition was such that he could not go. Shortly afterward he was confined to his bed and last Friday he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Everything was done that careful nursing and medical treatment could accomplish, but the end came at 5:30 a.m. yesterday. Mr. Oldham's early years in Iowa were full of incidents of great interest and his intimate friends and associates have often been entertained by his accounts of those stirring times. We regret that opportunity has not been afforded us to secure some of the information which these friends could give in order to make this account of his life more adequate to the deserts of the man who has passed from among us in the ripeness of years.
