(Note: William P. Pigg probably never sat for a portrait prior to his entering the service during the Civil War. However, I believe, like most of the men, that Private William P. Pigg took time during the 10 months the 86th was based in the Nashville, Tennessee area to sit for a portrait to send home to the family he missed so much. I also believe that, again, like most of the men, that he had multiple copies of that portrait to swap among his tentmates and mess mates. Then after the war, William lived well into the 20th Century. During the 60 years he lived after the war, William P. Pigg probably had his picture taken hundreds of times. I would love to see a copy of that portrait of Private William P. Pigg added to his Find A Grave Memorial for the benefit of the whole family and for the Princeville Heritage Museum. However, at this point, I would be thrilled just to see some pictures of him as an old man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

When French had 100 volunteers he led the Princeville volunteers into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, French and 95 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The men of the Princeville company elected French to be their Captain. On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, down to the railroad depot. There, at the depot, they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois, who had been mustered into service at Camp Peoria. Together, at the depot, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois boarded trains bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana, which was located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Two weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing the last Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marked on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp. During the next two years, Private William P. Pigg served faithfully in Co. K and the men of the 86th served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, William was witness to and a paricipant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina and marched with Sherman to the Sea. After the war came to a close, the surviving members of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington, D.C. where they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in May of 1865 on the 2nd day of the Grand Review. On June 6, 1865, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois were mustered out of the service there in Washington and they were soon put on a train bound for Chicago, where they received their final pay and were discharged from the service. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th were back home with their families in Central Illinois. William P.
