He was born July 21, 1928 near Dodge, NE to William and Zelpha (Howell) Kortum. He was a 1945 graduate of Fremont High School. Read More	************************************** William P. Kortum, 85 years, 5 months and 22 days, of Fremont, NE passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014 at his home. He was born July 21, 1928 near Dodge, NE to William and Zelpha (Howell) Kortum. He was a 1945 graduate of Fremont High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from Aug. 6, 1945 to April 21, 1953 during WWII and the Korean War. He then served in the Naval Reserves from Feb. 2, 1967 to Dec. 1, 1986 and retired as Chief Hospital Corpsman. William married Delores Garrido on November 5, 1947 in San Francisco, CA. They moved to Fremont in 1953 and he was employed at Hormel Foods until retiring in May of 1988. William was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont; Fleet Reserve Association; Naval Enlisted Reserve Association; the Fremont Honor Guard; V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20 both of Fremont. He is survived by his wife, Delores; daughter, Dawn Fritz of Fremont; sons, Dan & wife, Diane Kortum of Cedar Bluffs, NE and William A. Kortum of Fremont; sisters, Elaine Herre, and Ermagene & husband, Dale Ellison of Fremont; brother-in-law, Warren Hansen of Fremont; 7 grandchildren, Brooke & husband, John Nelson, Adam Fritz, Lance Kortum, Brandi & husband, Ryan Rieder, Heather, Shane & Tyler Kortum.and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Charles; sister, Roberta Hansen; and grandson, Joshua Fritz. Funeral service will be 2 PM, Thursday, at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE. The Rev. Michael Thomas will officiate. Visitation on Wednesday from 3 PM to 8 PM with the family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Burial will be at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20. Memorials may be given to Salem Lutheran Church, to the Dodge County Humane Society or to the Fremont Honor Guard. (mosermemorialchapel.com/obituary)
