WILLIAM JEWELL Farmer succumbs to attack of pneumonia after few days' illness AN OLD CITIZEN GONE William Jewell, Sr. for many years a leading citizen of the community, died at his home in Brock at an early hour Sunday morning [April 6, 1902] from an attack of pneumonia at the advanced age of 76 years, six months, and eleven days [Note: headstone shows death on Apr 5, 1902] The deceased had been a resident of the community over thirty-five years and was known and respected by everyone in the community. Formerly Mr. Jewell was a carpenter, contractor and builder, many buildings in this village and community having been erected under his instructions, notable among which are the Methodist and Baptist church houses. William Jewell was born in England Sept. 25, 1825. [Headstone says Sep 5] On April 11th, 1848, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa S. Elliott, at Post Church, England. Eight years later they sought a home in America, landing at New York March 26th, 1856, residing there till 1858, which year was spent in New Jersey. Then they moved to Loda, Ill. Remaining until 1857 [sic: 1867] when they removed to Nemaha county, Nebraska. Mr. Jewell has since made his home here, and it is here his family has grown to maturity. The companion of his life preceded him to his reward, but two daughters and eleven sons, as well as a large number of other relatives and friends mourn him. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Tuesday [8 Apr 1902] morning at 10:30, Rev. J. G. Stanard conducting the services, after which the remains were interred at the Lafayette cemetery.
