William Polk Dobson was a son of William Dobson (Sr.) and Martha Polk. Martha Polk was the dau. of James and Margaret Pollock of Hopewell Twp., Cumberland Co., PA, as evidenced by the will of said James Pollock, prob. in 1773, where he names his daughter, Martha 'DOBSON', as well as his wife Margaret and other children. William Dobson (Sr.) has often been reported (erroneously) as having a middle name of 'Carlisle', yet no documentation of him ever having a middle name has been found. I believe this was started at one point in time to differentiate him as being the one that came from Cumberland Co.,PA and Carlisle being the largest city near his last place of residence in PA. William Dobson's (Sr.), first land purchase in PA in 1665 was in, what was then Cumberland Co, (now Bedford Co.), near the present day village of Cesna, from where he was shortly 'run off by the Indians', according to the application filed by one Edward Ward, who later ended up patenting the property. William Dobson (Sr.) fled to Tybone Twp. Cumberland Co. (now Perry Co.) on Sherman's Creek, where he applied in 1666 (with a handwritten note) for 200 acres and settled there. He settled adjoining the property of Robert Pollock, whom I believe is somehow related to James Pollock of Hopewell Twp, the father of William Dobson's future wife, Martha. I descend from the brother of Martha Polk Dobson; Capt. William Polk of Accomac Co., VA, and have done extensive research on the Polk/Pollock and Dobson lines as well as many other connecting families. My uncle, James Polk's DNA was tested in 2009 which proves a connection of our Polk line to that of Robert and Magdalen Tasker Polk, who immigrated to Somerset Co., MD in the late 1680's and also proves NO relationship to President James K, Polk, a totally different line of Polks, therefore proving the erroneous assumption that William Dobson and Martha Polk Dobson as well as their descendants were related to President James K. Polk. President James K. Polk descends from a William and Margaret (Taylor) Polk, who arrived in America much later that the immigrant ancestor of Martha Polk Dobson, that being Robert Polk and Magdalen Tasker Polk of Somerset Co., MD. William Dobson (Sr.) nor his wife Martha Polk, (the parents of William Polk Dobson) ever lived in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA and therefore William Dobson Polk could not have been born there. In fact, William Polk Dobson's father, William Dobson (I refer as Sr. to keep them straight) is shown as already living in Surry Co. NC (which in 1789 became Stokes Co.) on the 1790 census, which makes William Polk Dobson's place of birth Stokes Co., NC since he was born in 1793. (Becki (Polk) Pavlik) Dec. 2012. ===
