Description	:	Funeral services for William Schuchardt, 76, of Elgin, Will be held at 3 pm Friday, May 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin. The Rev. David Kuhfal and the Rev. Michael Awe will officiate. Burial will be in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery at Elgin with Huffman's Brooks Chapel in charge of arrangements. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 229 and Sharkey-Reuss Post 5816 VFW. Pallbearers will be Mr. Schuchardt's four grandsons, Jerod Briese, Brandon Briese, Ryan Schuchardt, and Philip Schuchardt. William Richard Schuchardt, son of Chester W. and Leah E. (Alderson) Schuchardt was born March 22, 1927, in rural Elgin. He grew up on the George Alderson family farm northeast of Elgin, attended the "Little Daisy" District #41 school and graduated from Neligh High School in 1945. He was a member of the high school band and Future Farmers of America. As a boy, he attended the Elgin United Methodist Church and its Sunday School. On October 5, 1946, Mr. Schuchardt enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Crook, Nebr., and served as a T/5 with Co. B 24th Infantry in the occupation forces on Honshu, Japan. While there, he saw the aftermath of the destruction of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Lawton, Wash., on April 16, 1948. After returning to the farm, Mr. Schuchardt worked at a steel factory in Texas, worked with a wheat harvesting crew and worked at various other jobs. On January 15, 1952, he married Lois Strelow. the couple lived in Norfolk where Mr. Schuchardt was manager of the Meadow Grove Creamery and worked with Schaffer Pontiac. They moved, in 1955, to the George Alderson farm where he worked with his father. After his father's death in 1970, Mr. Schuchardt continued to farm the "Century Farm" until his death. The Schuchardt family belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin. Mr. Schuchardt died Saturday, May 10, at the Tilden Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Schuchardt; and a sister, Mildred Johnson. Survivors include a son and his wife, Rick and Jane of Fairfax Station, Va.; two daughters, Janice Briese of Aurora, Colo., and Cathy and her husband, Tom Conway of Brighton, Colo.; and four grandsons.
