Description	:	William was the 5th of 8 known children of John S. Sherrill and Elizabeth Helms. He lost his father at a very young age - in fact, when John died William and his 7 surviving siblings were aged 13 months through 20 years of age. William was only 7. His mother had 6 children still at home ranging in age from 13 months to 16 years; she never remarried and remained a widow for 43 years. William served during the Civil War with the 113th Illinois Infantry, which saw action in MS, AR, and TN. He served from 1862-1865. His older brother Joshua was killed in action in 1864. William married Elizabeth Jane DeWeese in Jan 1867 in Iroquois Co. IL. They had the following thirteen children: Martha Elizabeth 1867-1876 Fanny 1869-1880 infant infant infant Myrtle Eva 1877-1960 Lenora D. 1879-1969 infant Wilda 1883-1957 Ethel 1885-1918 Albert 1887-1900 infant Noah Benjamin 1891-1969 The children were born in a variety of different places: the first 6 were born in Iroquois Co. IL; #7 & #8 were born in Pottawattamie Co. IA; 9 through 13 were born in Ida Co. IA. During their marriage, William and his family lived in IL, IA, CO, and NE; he eventually ended his days in ND. Elizabeth died in Harrison, Sioux Co. NE in 1894, possibly in childbirth. William was left with 5 children ranging in age from 14 years to 29 months; eldest surviving daughter Myrtle married at the age of 17 three months after her mother's death. William returned to IA long enough to farm out the children to various relatives; in 1900 he is enumerated in Clay Co. IA working in a livery stable and living alone. In 1908 he took out a land patent on 160 acres in Coalfield Twp., Divide Co. ND. When his youngest son Ben turned 16 he traveled to ND to live with his father. William farmed wheat in the county until his death in the town of Noonan in Divide Co. ND. His obituary, published in the Noonan Miner, January 23, 1919: "Death of W.M Shirrel The people of this community were shocked to learn of the death of one of the prominent citizens, Mr. W. M Shirrel, which occurred at his home in this city late Saturday evening, Jan 18, heart trouble being the cause. He was 74 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Shirrel had been ailing for some time and had had several bad attacks during the past year but always seemed to rally. He was a pioneer settler of North Dakota having tiled and proven-up on a homestead just south of the city, later moving to town where he lived till death claimed him. He was an old war veteran having served in the Civil War. Short funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Rev. J. T. Beagarie officiating. The remains were shipped to Nebraska for interment and were accompanied by his son, Mr. Ben Shirrel, and wife." (We assume that Ben brought his father back to NE to be interred with his mother in Harrison Cemetery, Harrison, Sioux Co. NE, and we are researching further to confirm this.)
