C. were called upon to serve at the obsequies of those who had a long and honorable career in the Union armies during the Civil war. ...at two o'clock in the afternoon the Post assembled in the city cemetery to lay to rest the remains of Comrade William R. Newlon, well known in this city, having been born here on Feb. 5, 1847, and having carried on a grocery business on the west side of the square for some time. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Newlon, who will be remembered by the older residents of the city. He died at his home near Farmington, Ia., Thursday, Sept. 8, 1910, and the remains were brought here for burial. Early in life he was made an orphan by the death of his mother. Later he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith, and with them made the overland route to California during the days of the “gold fever.” While there he was again bereft of a mother's love and care by the death of Mrs. Smith. He and his adopted father then came back to Mt. Pleasant where he attended school for some time. At the age of sixteen he went to Mansfield, Ohio, whither his own father had removed. At eighteen he enlisted in the 1st regiment Ohio Independent Battery Volunteers, and served to the close of the war. On Dec. 6, 1867, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth E. Day, Richland Co, Ohio. Seven children, three boys and four girls, were born to them. His first wife having died, he was united in marriage with Nancy A. McKenzie, Washington, Co., Iowa. To this union a son and a daughter were born. The wife and all the children remain. Mr. Newlon was a kind, indulgent husband and father, and a good, honest, upright man, a neighbor who believed in doing to others as he would have them do to him. The funeral services were conducted by Pastor Weston. Deceased was a member of McFarland Post. His old comrades conducted their beautiful and fitting burial service at the grave. Then Captain Williams sounded “taps,” and the body was left to sleep until the trumpet call of the resurrection.
