William Robert Strouse was born July 18, 1925, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Clarence and Ruth Bovee Strouse. He grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from high school there. William Robert Strouse was born July 18, 1925, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Clarence and Ruth Bovee Strouse. He grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from high school there. Shortly before his 18th birthday, he joined the U.S. Navy, received electrician training and was assigned to the USS Tucson during its construction, commissioning and its tour in the Pacific during WWII. He was a proud Plank Owner of the Tucson, a crew member present for its construction in San Diego, its commissioning, shake down cruise, and first tour. Bill met Shirley Millett when they both attended Oakleigh Elementary School in Grand Rapids. After years of knowing each other, eventual dating and courtship, they were married June 7, 1947 in Grand Rapids. During school years Bill worked for his father who was a groundskeeper at a Grand Rapids golf course. Following the service he helped his father in law John Millett start the J.E. Millett Company in Waterloo in 1947. He worked there and was an owner at the time of its sale in 2006. Bill also worked at repairing organs and tape recorders, became a pilot with Instrument and Instructor ratings and was a Pilot Instructor at Lee Nichols Airfield and taught ground school at Hawkeye Community College. He was a lifelong learner, enjoyed work, airplanes and flying, photography, and was early into computers and in fact became a “tech geek” who was often getting the first of the newest technology. Bill was an active member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, USS Tucson Reunion Group, Sons of the American Revolution, the Quiet Birdmen, and Waterloo AMVETS. Preceded in death by: wife Shirley who died January 22, 1986, daughter Nancy Strouse, daughter in law Sandy Strouse, and brother Jack Strouse. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, 614 Randolph St. Waterloo Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa with military rites by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49 and U.S. Navy Honor Guard Obituary & photo published by Locke Funeral Home, Inc.
