Description	:	Son of Raymond & Charlotte (Kenyon) Smoots. They moved to the farm near Monroe when Bob was two years old. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and moved to Omaha for work to help support the family farm. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 14, 1942. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and moved to Omaha for work to help support the family farm. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 14, 1942. He was sent to Camp Clayburn, LA for basic training and was assigned to Company C 343 Combat Engineers. He was sent to southern England for more training and was attached to the British 8th Army for Operation Torch, the Invasion of North Africa in 1942, and the Battle at Kasserine Pass in 1943. In July of 1943, he participated in the Invasion of Sicily and the capture of Palermo. Bob took part in crossing the Messina Straights for the landing at Salerno, Italy and later to Cassino and the Port of Naples. In 1943, he spent Christmas near Monte Cassino and then boarded troop transport ships for the landing further up the coast of Italy for the Anzio landing. His unit moved north towards Rome after the breakout at Anzio. His unit was then ready for Operation Anvil, Invasion of southern France. Later in 1944, he crossed the Rhine River into Germany and spent his last Christmas, in the military, in the Ardennes Forest fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Ft. Leavenworth, KS were he was honorably discharged on October 25, 1945, and returned to the family farm. Bob learned to fly at the Columbus Airport where he received his private and commercial license and instrument rating. He later became an instructor for those wanting to fly. He was a member of the Nebraska Flying Farmers and later served as President. On September 17, 1955, Bob married Bethene Schmid at the Monroe United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Monroe American Legion Post 322 for 61 years. Bob served on the Monroe School Board for over 20 years and the Lower Loup Board. He was a member of the Genoa Masonic Lodge and Columbus Pawnee Shrine Honda Patrol. He lived and farmed near Monroe and was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church.
