Oaklund of Moses Lake who died as a result of injuries suffered in a highway collision at the north end of Moses Lake Friday afternoon. The two were pinned in the cab of their Volkswagen van after the car struck the projecting rear end of a flatbed truck on State Highway 17. Mr. Oaklund, 40, and Mrs. (Susan Ilene) Oaklund, 44, had six children ranging in age from six to 17 years. Services are scheduled for 2 pm Wednesday at the Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Merz officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Memorial Gardens with Eccleston-Penhallurick Chapel of Memories in charge. State patrol officers reported the unloaded flatbed truck, operated by Jerry Allen, 69, of Coulee City, was traveling toward Moses Lake on the outside lane of the four lane highway. Officers said Allen was slowing to park on the shoulder when the truck was struck from the rear by the Oaklund van being driven south by Mr. Oaklund and also in the outside lane. A Warden physician at the scene reported that Mr. Oaklund was alive for a short time after the crash but that he was dead on arrival at Samaritan Hospital. The Grant County coroner said he died of a crushed chest. Mrs. Oaklund died about three hours later while being flown to Spokane in a plane after physicians at Samaritan found she had suffered multiple complicated fractures and internal abdominal damage. State patrolmen, Moses Lake firemen and other motorists worked at least 20 minutes to extricated the injured persons from the crumpled metal at the front of the van. Mr. Oaklund was born in Holdredge, Neb., and Mrs. Oaklund in Eustis, Neb. they were married in 1945 in Norton, Kan., and moved that year to Kennewick. They moved in 1949 to Moses Lake where he has worked as an operating engineer. Survivors of the couple are the six children, all at the home in McConahie Flats. They are Rocky, Nancy, Russell, Susie, Linda and Ronney. Mr. Oaklund is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bessie Oaklund of Nampa, Idaho; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Birt of Nampa and Mrs. Charles Seigel of Beliot, Kan., and two brothers, Ralph of Walla Walla and Roy of Nampa. Mrs. Oaklund was born in Eustis, Neb. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Lucy Moritz of Elwood, Neb.; four sisters, Mrs. Harry Seih of Holdredge, Mrs. Delmar Lehman of Brady, Neb., Mrs. Melvin Houlden of Elwood and Mrs. Leo Ottman of Harvard, Neb.; and four brothers, Ralph Moritz of Torrington, Wyo., Paul of Castle Rock, Sterling of Lexington, Neb., and Kenneth of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
