Description	:	William R. Davis, one of the pioneers of this city and state, died on Sunday, July 23, 1899, at 4 o'clock p.m., from paralysis. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church. The large church was filled to its greatest capacity, every seat being occupied long before the hour set for the service. The large church was filled to its greatest capacity, every seat being occupied long before the hour set for the service. The remains were escorted from the residence to the church by the G.A.R. and the Odd Fellows, Mr. Davis having been a member of both organizations. Mr. Davis was born in Yadkin county, North Carolina, November 26, 1824, where he was married to Miss Margaret A. Bohannon, removing to Iowa in 1852, traveling the entire distance with an ox team. In 1857 they settled in Cass county, Nebraska, being among the first settlers of the territory. Mr. Davis was elected to the third, fourth and fifth sessions of the territorial legislature, and was appointed assistant assessor of internal revenue in 1862, and enlisted in the army in 1864. His wife died while he was in the army, and he was again married, in 1866, to Miss Hannah C. Coleman, who survives him. In 1868, he and his son-in-law, J. N. Beaty, opened the first store in Seward, and Mr. Davis has been in business here ever since, and for a number of years has been the head of the firm of W. R. Davis & Sons. He was practically all his life a member of the Methodist church, and was always active in Christian work. For many years he had been authorized as a local preacher, and frequently filled the pulpit when the pastor was absent. Mr. Davis had held many positions of honor and trust. He had served as mayor of Seward, and was a member of the board of education at the time of his death. Mr. Davis' seven children were all present at his death bed and funeral, as follows: Mrs. Rebecca Beaty and Mrs. M. E. Roberts of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. A. C. Hull of Hastings, Nebr.; A. Y. Davis, M. A. V. Davis and Miss Nellie Davis of this city; F. R. Davis of Grand Junction, Colo. Besides these there were present the following: Stephen A. Davis and wife, of Plattsmouth, Nebr., Wesley A. and Will Davis of Weeping Water, and O. J. Davis of Syracuse; nephews and nieces of the deceased; Mrs. F. M. Timblin of Weeping Water, Asa Coleman of Nehawka, Andrew Coleman of Diller, and Amos Coleman of Seward, sister and brothers of Mrs. Davis; Mc. D. Towner and wife of Ulysses, son-in-law of Mr. Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Diers and Will Towner of Ulysses, grandchildren of the deceased.
