Description	:	William Rufus Forrest was called to rest Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001. Captain Rufus was born in Portsmouth, Va., on June 13, 1919. He has been living in Diggs, Va., all of his life. At the age of 16, he worked on an oil tanker for a short time, after which he worked for Wood Towing Co. on the Pearless for a while. He served in the US Navy and then began working for the Penn. Read More	William Rufus Forrest was called to rest Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001. Captain Rufus was born in Portsmouth, Va., on June 13, 1919. He has been living in Diggs, Va., all of his life. At the age of 16, he worked on an oil tanker for a short time, after which he worked for Wood Towing Co. on the Pearless for a while. He served in the US Navy and then began working for the Penn. Railroad in 1936 where he retired as a barge captain. He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace E. Forrest, who died in 1978, and his father, William James Forrest, who died in 1936. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Winifred (Winnie) Forrest; three daughters, Betty Lou Mazza and her husband, Melvyn, of Fredericksburg, Virginia Sparrow and her husband, Robert, of Gwynns, and Lorena Cooke, the widow of James B. Cooke of Gloucester; one son, David Earl Forrest and his wife, Mary, of Trophy Club, Texas; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, Va. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home with interment to follow in Milford Cemetery, Moon, Va. All forms of contributions can be made to the building fund of Salem United Methodist Church, Box 425, Mathews, VA 23109.
