Read More	Gainesville Sun - Monday, April 14, 1986 FORMER SUPERINTENDENT "TINY" TALBOT DIES AT 67 William S. "Tiny" Talbot, former superintendent of the Alachua County public school system and a former Gainesville city commissioner, died Saturday in Deland after a long illness. He was 67. He served two terms as superintendent of schools, from 1965 to 1972, and was a member of the City Commission and the Regional Utilities Board from 1973 to 1976. Mr. Talbot presided over Alachua County's public schools during turbulent times. In 1964, four blacks were admitted to school under a court order. In the years that followed, federal judges called Alachua County one of the best voluntary desegregated school systems in the South. By 1971, no school in the country was referred to as "Negro" and almost 7,000 black youngsters were attending class with whites. Mr. Talbot faced threats from both races, gunshots at his home, vandalism, firebombs, insults and violence at Lincoln and Gainesville high schools, all stemming from the race issue and the closing and consolidation of schools. During his tenure, he also had to contend with a bond issue that failed and another that scraped by just in time to build the schools that relieved the racial tensions and modernized the county school system. In 1968, the county's teachers went on strike, but Mr. Talbot managed to keep the schools open and steered the school system back to normalcy when the walkout was over. Mr. Talbot was Alachua County's last elected superintendent. He was able to win at the polls, by his own admission, partly because of his ability to remember every student. "It wasn't that I have a photographic memory." Mr. Talbot once said, "The secret was that I kept visiting English classes - everyone has to take English, you know - until I knew every face." Mr. Talbot himself decided that an appointed superintendent was best for Alachua County and helped convince Alachua County voters to approve the changeover. In 1984, the Alachua County School Board named a new elementary school in northwest Gainesville after Mr. Talbot, fulfilling a promise made more than 10 years earlier. When he stepped down as superintendent in 1972, the board had resolved to name a school for him. Gainesville High's baseball field also is dedicated to Mr. Talbot. Mr. Talbot, tagged with the nickname "Tiny" by an Army sergeant during his ROTC cadet days, was born in Altha and had lived in Gainesville for 50 years. He was a graduate of the University of Florida and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to Gainesville as a teacher and coach at Gainesville High School, and served as dean of boys and assistant principal from 1946 to 1953. He then was a principal for two years at Sidney Lanier Elementary School, for three years at Buchholz Junior High and for six years at Gainesville High. He directed curriculum for the Alachua County school system until he was elected superintendent. After he stepped down from the superintendent's job, he became principal of Kirby Smith Elementary School and then vocational coordinator at Gainesville High. He retired Oct. 31, 1980. Mr. Talbot was a member of R.T. Schafer Lodge 350 F & AM, the Shrine Club and First Baptist Church. He also belonged to a variety of local, state and national education associations, the Florida Association of Coaches and the North Florida Sports Officials Association. He is survived by his wife, Reba Pickett Talbot of Gainesville; son, William S. "Butch" Talbot, Jr. of DeLand; brother. James A. Talbot of Archer; sister, Edna Earl Kennedy of Niceville; and three grandchildren. ========== Funeral services for Mr. Talbot were held at 10:30a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 1986, at First Baptist Church Gainesville with Rev. David Smith conducting the services. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites under the care of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home, 404 N. Main Street, Gainesville, Fla. 32601.
