William Schreckengost was born in Lebanon county, Penn., on the 6th day of May 1813, and died in great peace at his home near Keosauqua, on the 6th day of June, 1900. At the age of 21 years he removed to Ohio, where he united in marriage with Miss Anna Berea, March 24, 1839. William Schreckengost was born in Lebanon county, Penn., on the 6th day of May 1813, and died in great peace at his home near Keosauqua, on the 6th day of June, 1900. At the age of 21 years he removed to Ohio, where he united in marriage with Miss Anna Berea, March 24, 1839. He removed, with his bride, the same year, to Indiana, where they lived together for 27 years. Here their two children, Joseph and Anthony, were born. Anthony died in early infancy. On the 20th day of May, 1853, Brother Schreckengost united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Indiana. He was happily converted and lived for 47 years in conscious experience of salvation and loyal devotion to the church of his choice. Thirty-four years ago, with his beloved wife and son Joseph, he came to Keosauqua, Iowa, and purchased their home adjoining the city. During all these years he has fully sustained a high reputation as an industrious, honest, good citizen and a faithful member of the church in Keosauqua. he could truly sing, "I Love thy Kingdom Lord. The house of thine abode, The church our blest Redeemer saved With his own precious blood." His heart was in all the interests of the church. If her character was assailed his interests were imperiled and whatever promoted her true glory seemed also to increase his joy. Our brother was especially happy in his relations to the pastors who from time to time served the church. His home with its pleasant surroundings and good cheer was their home as often as they chose to accept its hospitality. During the conference years from September, 1873, to September, 1876, the old church building was remodeled and improved at a cost of $2,700. Our brother was much interested in this work, and by his counsel, money and labor, for he was a "skilled workman in wood," he contributed very much indeed to the success of the undertaking. it was his often expressed desire to live to see the new church completed and paid for, and he greatly rejoiced in its completion. He was in feeble health for some years and spoke often of the infirmities of age as hard to bear and yet he bore them very cheerfully. He leaves behind him his aged and lifelong companion, his son Joseph and wife, with four grand children and seventeen great grand children. The funeral service was held in the new Methodist church, conducted by Rev. R.L. Patterson, pastor, assisted by Rev. C.S.
